Direction of the Script

Indus texts are normally read from right to left. However, if there is a motif associated with the inscription, the motif may hold the key to where you should start reading. There are several examples of seals from Banawali, where the animal motif on the sealing faces left. In those cases, the inscription is read from left to right. That is, the animal's head marks the beginning of the inscription. I suggest that you think of the words as originating in the animal's mouth.
